Death sentence?

I recently read that Shoko Asahara was given the death penalty. However it was my understanding that there was no capitol punishment in Japan.

I don't know of statistics there but I did read one story of a digruntled bank employee in Japan who poisoned to death like a dozen coworkers and died having set the record for being the person to live the longest on death-row at some 40-odd years. I think that was from the Guiness book.

The assumed rarity of executions there from the bank-case, I foresee Asahara living for a long-time.

strange that in looking now I read: "On February 27, 2004, Mainichi Shimbun reported that Shoko Asahara, the founder of the AUM Shinrikyo cult had been sentenced to death in the Tokyo District Court after being convicted on 13 charges that claimed the lives of 27 victims." because in 2003 I was in Thailand discussing Asahara with some Japanese fellows and they expressed to me that they knew about his sentencing. perhaps he had only gone to trial by that time.
